HIGHLIGHTING TWO ICONIC LANDMARKS GOT THE WORLD ARCHITECTURE PRIZE IN AUSTRALIA

The architecture projects of centuries do not only show the talent of architects and construction engineers, but they also become the symbol in places where such landmarks were built. With an experience of being the leader in steel technology for more than 165 years, BlueScope has continuously contributed to the creation of sustainable beauty for the centurial landmarks. Additionally, two iconic landmarks are remarkably awarded architectural prizes in Australia and the world: Warship Gallery – Australian National Maritime Museum and Katsumata Community Centre, Geelong Victoria – Australia. Let’s admire the unique architectural features of these two projects that mark BlueScope’s legacy.

Located at Darling harbor, upon its inception, Australia Maritime Museum is expected not to be a tourism site but also a harmonic link between the museum campus and relics of historical ships from Warship Pavilion Gallery.

The gallery was designed and developed by the leading architects as a new statement on architecture. The building appearance was inspired by shipbuilding geometry, making the dry gallery become a true art installation masterpiece and helping the audience to think of a navy ship with cool gray tones, powerfully surfing on the water surface.

To successfully realize this idea, the works were also faced with the most critical issue: The impact of maritime climate’s extreme elements at Darling harbor. That is why its roof and walls must not be only thin to optimize the internal use space but also fight against the external extreme corrosion.

With such special requirements, the selection of BENCHMARK heat-insulating plates with COLORBOND® Ultra – Woodland Grey® powered by ACTIVATE™ technology enabled the architect Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp to design a unique building, with high aesthetics, outstanding heat performance, and resistance to the extreme maritime climate of Darling Harbor.

ACTIVATE™ technology supported by 4-tier matrix micro-structure acted as a perfect shield to protect the works against corrosion even in the coastal environment.

By using the COLORBOND® sheet to harmonize the aesthetic values and optimal work protection performance, the warship gallery – Australia Maritime Museum is promised to become a new historical symbol for sustainable beauty.

Katsumata Community Centre located at Kardinia International College was established in 2011 as a loyalty to the institution’s founder and famous education campaigner – Mr. Yoshimaro Katsumata.

The works were not only known as an addition to Kardinia International College but also a famous art performance site in Geelong Australia. Therefore, the work’s design was characterized by high requirements on utility and impressive architecture.

The architect’s core vision for this project was deeply embedded with abstract shapes, bold colors, and unique design to create a modern and ambitious space, reflecting the vibrant personality of students, performing functions for the local community.

Student safety was ranked as the top priority of Kardinia International College. Hence, fire safety procedures must be applied.

To secure the aforesaid factors, panels with LPCB & FM standardized COLORBOND® sheet were used for the works’ coverage, helping the architects to explicitly show off their design and demonstrate the outstanding resistance to extreme temperature in Geelong.

Thanks to the advanced COLORBOND® sheet incorporated in Katsumata Community Centre, the center’s extraordinary and impressive architectural beauty was highlighted in Geelong Victoria.
